OK. I SOOOOOOOO know that feeling. And then you know what I did about it? I went and I spoke to them. OK, so some of them WERE my Correctional Officers, but a cop is a cop, right?! NOT!
I have found “resentment” to be the most informative emotion ever invented on planet earth! The only reason you feel resentment is because you are, for whatever reason, experiencing something negative and not saying how you feel to the person “making you have that experience.” it is NOT only the police allows that mentality to continue to be projected into our communities, and if you feel this way, you MUST say something in the appropriate forum about it. It is not ok to feel that way and not do something about it, even if it is just to get it off your chest to people who SHOULD care about it. go to your city council or police commission and tell them how you feel and how that is not what you pay them to make you feel. Smile at them when you say it, remind them you would like to feel safer in your community and would like to help improve your community in that way.
and then listen.
if they say nothing the first time, it may be because they are shocked and have NO CLUE how to respond to you. Keep going back and telling them your stories and how you feel and how they make you feel. THEY HAVE TO LISTEN … and you are not alone.
and the truth is, usually after you get it off your chest like that, that paranoid feeling goes away pretty quickly and you just have to do it once or twice, three times max.
